Our new artist-in-residence will create a real buzz!
An artist who celebrates the beauty of the smaller things in life is WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre’s new artist-in-residence.
Cotswold artist Cath Hodsman has spent years sketching and painting beautiful pieces of detailed insect art.
Her work is widely recognised for its scientific accuracy as well as its obvious beauty and as such, is featured at the Natural History Museum in London.
From May she will have an ongoing presence at WWT Slimbridge running drop-in sketching sessions for day visitors, day-long art workshops and activities for children and schools.
She will also spend time drawing and painting in the Centre near the gallery so visitors can meet her to learn more about her work and sketching in general.
Sally Munro, Marketing Manager, at the Centre, said: “We are delighted that Cath will be working with us over the summer and are pleased the spotlight will be on insects which are hugely important to wetlands.
“At WWT Slimbridge we have a long association with art and we recognise that many visitors to our site want to capture the beauty of nature through photography and art. We really admire Cath’s work and think visitors will enjoy meeting her and learning how they can sketch and paint insects.”
Cath, who lives in Minchinhampton, said: “I’m really looking forward to being WWT Slimbridge’s artist in residence.
“I believe that looking after the natural world means often starting at the bottom with insects. They might be amongst our smallest creatures, but they are so often our most fascinating and arguably our most important life form for guaranteeing a safe future for all of us”
Over two weeks (from 19 May to 24 May and from 30 June to 6 July) Cath will spend a couple of hours a day based in the RBC Rain Garden and will demonstrate to visitors how to sketch and paint insects.
Cath is also running two one-day painting courses. The first Beetles, Butterflies & Bees is on July 15 and Painting Pollinators on August 30.
