Petitions updates
European Nature Directives
Last year you were among 100,000 people in the UK who told the European Commission that you don’t want the Birds and Habitats Directives to be weakened.
The UK Government heard you. They’ve told Europe they don’t want the Directives to be weakened either. Thank you for helping to give the Government the strength to take that position on behalf of the UK, it’s really helped.
Next week, there’ll be a vote at European level. Armed with your backing, we’ve been meeting with MEPs to make sure they know how much you care.
Lead ammunition poisoning
Thousands of ducks, swans and geese are being poisoned every year by ingesting toxic lead ammunition, left behind after shooting.
WWT is conducting research on this issue as part of our programme of tackling animal disease, whether its caused by bacteria or, as in this case, pollution in the environment. We’ve worked with shooting groups and the Government to gain as much information as possible, so that a decision on whether to ban or keep lead is based on the best possible evidence.
Well done to everyone who signed an independent petition, on the Parliament website. Because more than 10,000 of you signed, the Government will be obliged to post a response and email it to everyone who signed. If you know anyone else who may want to sign the petition, please forward them the link.
Your actions show the Government this issue matters to you and shouldn't remain on a back shelf for even more decades than it has. The petition map shows that most signatories live in rural areas, so rural MPs will know it matters especially in their constituencies.
