Pollinator benches in the House of Commons
Our pollinator benches were recently nominated in the 'Great British Wildlife Restoration' BIAZA competition.
Popular pollinator benches shortlisted for award.
Designed and built by our brilliant Grounds Team, our pollinator benches were nominated in the Great British Wildlife Restoration competition, alongside projects from a number of zoos and aquariums.
Not only do they conserve international wildlife and habitats, but zoos and aquariums are also protecting the essential species in the heart of Britain. Our pollinator benches are just one of the many projects BIAZA zoos and aquariums are undertaking to help nature and biodiversity thrive in our wild isles.
Grounds Manager, Chris Rixton, attended the Speaker's House at the House of Commons, in London, after an invitation by the Speaker of the House: The Right Honourable, Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP.
Unfortunately we didn’t come away as winners on this occasion, but we're very proud as we were up against some fantastic conservation projects across the UK, including local projects - conserving the tiger beetle at Sparsholt College and restoring our waterways: AQUA campaign at Bristol Zoo Project.
Our pollinator benches were created to connect our visitors with our wetlands. The new seating encourages you to stop, listen and take a moment to relax in nature. They're stylish, comfortable and built from mainly recycled materials.
The benches have provided new vantage points of our wetlands, as well as new habitats for our local pollinator and insect friends. Plus they've hopefully provided visitors with some inspiration for their own gardens!
So come and take a seat on your next visit.
