Saline and Freshwater Lagoon
Highlights from the waders this week include lapwing, curlew, whimbrel and one redshank. A great white egret was showing nicely on the saline lagoon earlier this week too. Black-tailed godwit numbers have been increasing on the freshwater lagoon, as have the numbers of teal, which are always lovely to see. The freshwater lagoon is also a great place to see tonnes of tufted ducklings.
Millennium Wetlands
On deep water lake, a brood of shoveler ducklings are growing up nicely along with a few broods of pochard ducklings. A tawny owl was seen at night on the northern loop and a tawny owlet has also been heard on the cycle path. There seems to be a new grasshopper warbler near the canoe safari, its distinctive song can be heard as it prepares for migration back to Africa. Two stonechats have been in the millennium wetlands too. Common darter dragonflies have been spotted for the first time this week and they are sure to become a common sight as the summer goes on.
