There was a nice selection of waders out on the Estuary at low tide on Monday, including lots of colourful Shelduck in amongst the Brent and Oystercatcher. Shelduck are best seen during the winter months when their numbers increase, although they are present all year round. There was also a solo Grey plover running about on the mudflats with the Redshank. Grey plover are mainly here over autumn and winter time, but before they leave in the spring they can be seen sporting a black belly as their breeding plumage comes in.
Stonechat were seen amongst the reeds at the Peninsular Saltmarsh, balancing expertly on the swaying stalks and flying up into the air. Long-tailed tits (pictured) can also be seen in larger groups now as they flock together to feed and to huddle up during cold winter nights. They form large flocks with other tits during the cold months and can be all seen feeding together in a spectacle of colour!
