Recent Sightings (19th-22nd May)
Millennium Wetlands
With the recent male Green Woodpecker making itself heard in the reserve. a female was also seen on 22nd. We also have had a report of 2 Lesser Whitethroat near the canoe safari hut! A great count of 13 Blcakcap, 16 Chiffchadd, 11 Whitethroat and 11 Sedge Warbler adds to this weeks species count. Furthermore, 8 Song thrush, 3 Reed Bunting, 2 Reed Warbler, 2 Goldfinch, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 1 long-tailed tit have been counted, which corresponds to previous low counts of these small birds. There was also a fly over by the Peter Scott Hide of a Cuckoo, and in the air, 2 Ravens could be seen. There have also been over 20 Sand Martins flying in and around the Lake.
On the waters much action can be seen including 2 Spoonbill having a feed, which normally use the saline lagoon area. More counts include 8 Pochard, 9 Tufted Duck, 14 Shelduck, 4 Lapwing, 7 Gadwall and 2 Little Grebe and a Grey Heron. There has also been a male Shoveler briefly in the area. There are still good numbers of Black-Tailed Godwit on Deep Water Lake, with 517 counted on 21st.
British Steel Hide
Two male Shoveler were also seen on the saline lagoons this week as well as 1 on the freshwater lagoon. A Wheatear was also seen on the saline lagoon, along with Sedge Warbler and a Whitethroat. Five Canada Geese and a Greylag Goose were using the area as wells as 1 Lapwing, 63 Shelduck, 1 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 2 Tufted Duck, 2 Moorhen, 1 Dunlin, 46 Black-Headed Gull. 3 Herring Gull and 19 Lesser Black-Backed Gull.
Other Wildlife
Dragonflies and Damselflies are really starting to show well in this glorious weather! We have lots of sightings of Blue Tailed Damselflies, and site first sighting of a Beautiful Domiselle! Hairy dragonflies and Hawkers are also being seen, as well as a sighting of a Broad-Bodied Chaser.
