Recent Sightings 20th-25th September

Highlights - Grey Plover, Mediterranean Gull, Spotted Redshank and Pintail.

British Steel Hide

Around 50 Mediterranean Gulls were seen amongst the Black Headed Gulls, to tell the difference look for the Med Gulls thicker / redder bill and legs and white feathers at the end of the wings. Grey plover have also been seen amongst the Gulls on the saline lagoon displaying their charming running behaviour. An amazing 394 Curlew were counted wading out on the lagoon! Pintail have also been arriving for winter and can be seen from the British Steel Hide on both the saline lagoon and Dafen scrapes

Each week the numbers of Wigeon arriving for winter increases on the Dafen Scrapes. This week numbers of Geese have increased too, including over 150 Greylags. Two Knot and two Spotted Redshank and a Common Sandpiper have been spotted there too.

Millennium Wetlands

On rainier days you can spot over 30 Little Egrets roosting in the trees next to Deep Water Lake. You can also often hear the Water Rails distinctive call at the same time. Walking around the reserve Great Spotted Woodpeckers and Jays can regularly be seen flying from tree to tree. Lapwing are now being seen on the Deep Water Lake islands where they will breed in spring.
