British Steel Hide
There have been good numbers of redshank on the saline lagoon again, and although in small numbers, its been nice to see curlew, greenshank and grey plovers this week too. The distinctive call of a mediterannean gull was heard but we never spotted the perpetrator. A beautiful firecrest was seen in the grounds. As always, we have the treat of watching up to five spoonbills feed right outside the british steel hide.
Millennium Wetlands
Early on thursday morning we carried out our first bird survey and we saw our first chiffchaff of the season. The great crested grebe has stuck around on deep water lake accompanying lots of tufted ducks and five pochards. Waders have been using the millennium wetlands a lot more now we are heading into spring - in particular black tailed godwits like washing and preening in the lake. Both black headed gulls and lapwings are starting to gather in their nesting areas. The most exciting news of all is that a pair of kingfishers have been checking out the bank and using the posts right outside the herons wing hide, so we are really hoping they choose this as their nesting site!
