Recent Sightings 24 December - 1 January
Highlights: Avocet, Long-tailed Duck, Treecreeper, Kingfisher, Hen Harrier
An exciting spot this week was a Long-tailed Duck which has been seen on the Freshwater Lagoon and Dafen Scrapes. It has been hanging around for a few days, so you may see it on your next visit!
The Tick and Twitch event today (1st Jan) has brought lots of great sightings. The Avocet is still around on the Saline Lagoon and has been joined by a Hen Harrier, Marsh Harrier, and Peregrine. Also here are the usual Black-tailed Godwit, Spoonbill, Greenshank, Redshank, and Curlew. Birds seen on the Estuary include Oystercatcher, Pintail, and Brent Geese.
On Deep Water Lake, Shoveler, Teal, Mallard, Tufted Duck and Snipe can also be seen regularly. Kingfishers can sometimes be seen fishing and flying past the Heron's Wing and Peter Scott hides. Around the Northern Loop, Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Long-tailed Tit, and Bullfinch are also regularly seen flitting round the trees.
The reserve team have been setting up camera traps to catch more wildlife and one by the Canoe Safari has been particularly action-packed with Otters and their cubs. The family have been seen playing, eating, and checking out the camera, mostly during the night. Hopefully we will see some of their mischief during daylight hours!
