Recent Sightings (3rd-6th July)
Millennium Wetlands
A count from Deep Water Lake, included 303 Black-Tailed Godwit, along with 17 Gadwall, 18 Mallard, 16 Cormorant and 4 Little Grebe. One Moorhen and a family of Coot were seen from the Heron Wing Hide, there was also two broods of Tufted Duck and several Mallard ducklings. A Grey Heron, 34 Black Headed Gull and 1 Mediterranean Gull were out on the lake also.
British Steel Hide
A male Ruff is still on the Dafen Scrapes. Along with 1 Black-Tailed Godwit, a juvenile Shelduck, 1 Lapwing and 8 Teal. Out on the saline lagoon 3 Greenshank were in the area, as well as 2 Little Egret, 78 Black-Headed Gull, 7 Lesser Black-Backed Gull and 5 Shelduck.
Other Wildlife
It is peak season for seeing dragonflies! Newly emerged and inquisitive Southern Hawkers can be spotted around the reserve. Broad-Bodied Chaser are enjoying the pond walk area. Lots of Azure and Common Damselflies, these are very similar species but look out for the differences in their abdomen patterns. The Small Red-Eyed Damselfly has been seen breeding in the sheltered bays.
This weather is great for our butterflies! Many were enjoyed on today's Walk with the Warden, including Ringlet, Comma, Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral, Skipper and a Gatekeeper.
