Recent sightings 4th - 7th May
Highlights include, Broad-bodied chaser dragonfly, Little ringed plover and Garden warbler.
Shelduck continue to be a regular sight across the saltmarsh. A pair of Pintail have been seen resting on the edges of the saline lagoon. On the Dafen scrapes a pair of Little ringed plover have been seen performing courtship displays. A wide variety of gull species continue to be regularly seen including, Greater black-backed, Lesser black-backed, Herring and Black-headed gulls. A pair of Garganey have been regularly seen close to the Goodalls hide. Seen from the observatory was a pair of Mediterranean Gulls looking for nesting sites within our Black-headed gull colony.
Millennium Wetlands
Our Mute swan pair on deep water lake have been seen with two cygnets. Ducklings and goslings are becoming a more frequent site across the reserve. We continue to get regular sightings of Tufted duck, Shelduck, Gadwall and Pochard around Deep water lake. Large numbers of Black-tailed godwit have been regularly seen from the Herons wing hide, sheltering at high tide. Marsh harrier has been seen flying over the Western scrapes on Monday.
Sedge and Reed warblers are now a regular sound from the reedbeds. Chiffchaff and Willow warbler have been regularly seen around the northern loop. 3 Lesser whitethroat have been seen around the reserve, most commonly near the spiral screen. A Garden warbler has been heard regularly near the Herons wing hide. On Tuesday we have our first records of Swifts for the year.
We have lots of sightings of Blue tailed damselflies and occasional sightings of Broad-bodied chaser dragonflies. Orange tipped, Speckled wood, Peacock and Brimstone butterflies are a common occurance around the northern loop of the reserve.
