Recent sightings 5th - 7th June
Highlights include, Peregrine, Yellow-legged gull, Pochard and White crab spider
Recently from the Steel hide has been a group of 21 Curlew, 18 Black-tailed godwit and small numbers of Dunlin. Some of our Lapwing fledglings from the Millennium wetlands can be seen feeding out on the salt marsh. Little ringed plover can still be seen feeding on the Dafen scrapes, an encouraging sign that the nest is still active. A Yellow-legged gull has been seen sheltering with the other gull on the Dafen scrapes. Shelduck ducklings are appearing around the grounds and can often be seen from the Observatory hide.
Millennium Wetlands
We have seen three broods of Pochard ducklings around Deep water lake, with some often being seen from the Peter scott hide. The Black-headed gull chicks are doing well though hard to spot from the hides thanks to their excellent camouflage. Black-tailed godwit continue to feed on Deep water lake and the Western scrapes. A Peregrine has been seen hunting over the reserve on Wednesday as well as Buzzards and Sparrowhawks.
Our warblers are starting to fledge now with Chiffchaff and Whitethroat young being seen around the reserve. Blackcap are regularly heard around the northern loop. Sedge and Reed warblers are heard regularly from the reedbeds on the way to the Welsh water hide.
Broad bodied chasers and hairy dragonflys are regularly seen around the Pond walk area. Near Hopkins folly, Common blue and Small copper butterfly's have been seen. White crab spiders have been seen on the Oxeye daisy's.
