Recent Sightings (6th-8th May)
Millennium Wetlands
The Black-Tailed Godwits are loving the muddy areas of Deep Water Lake, with over 200 using the sight recently. Also on the lake and throughout the reserve you can see Pochard (2), Tufted Duck (22), Gadwall (11), Little Grebe (3) and Shelduck (3). There are pairs of Greylag Geese and Canada Geese in the area too.
The reserve is a alive with singing Blackcap, with 25 being heard on 8th. The Northern Loop is a great place to spot one! Along with these summer birds, others on site include 7 Whitethroat, 18 Chiffchaff, 5 Cetti's Warbler, 3 Reed Warbler, 2 Reed Bunting and 14 Sedge Warbler! More activity on site includes 14 Goldfinch, 7 Song Thrush, 7 Bullfinch, 3 Jay and 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Green Woodpecker. A Mediterranean Gull was seen flying over the site. Also in the Sky has been 2 Swift and 4 Swallow, as well as a female Sparrowhawk.
British Steel Hide
Two Spoonbill are in the area, along with over a dozen Shelduck. There are not many waders in the area but Swallows and Sand Martins are enjoying the delights offered to them above the scrapes and lagoons on the Dafen Scrapes.
Our saltmarsh is now being host to a group of cattle, they vary in breed but are well suited to the vegetation that grows out there. They can be seen from the Michael Powell Hide and British Steel Hide, as well as the Viewing Tower.
Other Wildlife
The sunny bank holiday bought many active butterflies out. Green-Veined Whites and Orange-tips can be a common site. Other butterflies seen include Speckled Wood, Small White and Small Tortoiseshell. Look out for Hairy Dragonflies as they are starting to emerge.
