Recent Sightings 7th - 12th January
Highlights: Merlin, Shoveler, Little Egret.
Dafen Scrapes and Saline lagoon:
With a new frost this week we have seen a lower number of wading birds on the Saline lagoon and Dafen scrapes, however the numbers of Ducks have remained steady with Wigeon, Shoveler, and Teal making up the majority of the ducks present on the Dafen scrapes (12/01). On Thursday (11/01) a Sparrow hawk and a Buzzard were also observed on the north-eastern edge of the Dafen scrapes. With Little Egrets being glimpsed throughout the burrows of the saline marshes (12/01).
Millennium Wetlands:
The frost this week has seen the majority of the Deep water lake, seen from the Sir Peter Scott Hide, freeze over. This led to a reduction in the number of Lapwing that have been present on the Islands for the last few weeks. On Friday (12/01) a Merlin was seen flying low over the lake. With Tufted, Shoveler, Gadwall and Teal also being present on the lake through out the week.
In the Northern loop a variety of song birds Bullfinches, Long-tailed tits, Goldcrests, Blue Tits, Great tits, Redwings, Song thrushes and Greater-Spotted Woodpecker were all recorded in the wooded section of the Millennium Wetlands.
