Recent Sightings (9th-12th June)

2 Spoonbills are still viewable from the British Steel Hide (12th), as well as 11 Redshank, 17 Lapwing (including a juvenile), 2 Mute Swans, 2 Linnets and a Buzzard. The upcoming high tides are going to replenish the saline lagoons very low water levels, hopefully attracting some new birds. On Deep Water Lake 620 Black-tailed Godwits and 2 Knot were counted (9th), as well as 9 Pochard, 7 Shoveler, 46 Gadwall, 17 Mallard, 2 Mute Swans, a family of Coot and a couple of Tufted Duck broods. Almost all of our Great and Blue Tits in our nest boxes have now fledged young, and with only one nest predated, it seems they have had a very good year. Mediterranean Gulls have been heard flying overhead quite regularly recently, and it won't be long now until we get a bit of a post-breeding build up of them (134 in 2016), usually best seen from the British Steel Hide. A Painted Lady was seen in amongst a mixture of other butterfly species on the reserve, including Common Blues, Small Tortoiseshells, Large Skippers, Commas and Speckled Woods. A few moths have been noted also with Blood-vein, good numbers of Silver y's and a White Ermine.
