Recent Sightings 9th - 13th October
Highlights: Sparrow Hawk, Oyster Catcher, Snipe, Kingfisher
Dafen scrapes and Saline lagoon:
Plenty of ducks could be seen enjoying the wet weather on the 13th in the Dafen Scrapes With 57 Gadwalls, 16 Teal, 11 Tufted, 24 Shoveler,2 Pintails,13 Mallards and 2 Shelducks all being spotted from the British steel hide. Amongst the Ducks a small number of Black-tailed Godwits were also present. Out on the Saline Lagoon a solitary Oyster Catcher was present 13th october.
Millennium Wetlands:
On the reserve 5 Snipe are reliably seen from the Sir Peter Scott Hide alongside the Kingfisher who can be seen darting from one fishing perch to another. Flying over the Northern side of the lake a Sparrow Hawk was glimpsed on 11th October.
With the wet weather this week only a few moths were out to be seen but the Pink Barred sallow, Dark Rustic and Drinker Moths were all recorded on the reserve.
Woodland Wonders:
Along the northern Loop of the millennium wetlands a veritable treasure trove of fungi is there to be found, with an ample supply of different substrates to grow on there is a variety Mushrooms waiting to be uncovered. With the Common Inkcaps and Glistening Inkcaps being the most numerous seen along the path however also present were Wrinkled Club, Crimped Gill, Bitter Bolete, Sheathed Woodtuft and Fairy Fingers.
