Reserve update - whilst we are closed let us bring the reserve to you

Whilst our Welney Wetland Centre is closed to the public, our much reduced team continue working behind the scenes. Caring for the wetland habitat and wildlife, bringing the reserve to you the only way we currently can on the website and social media.

Whilst our Welney Wetland Centre is closed to the public, our much reduced team continue working behind the scenes. Caring for the wetland habitat and wildlife, bringing the reserve to you the only way we currently can on the website and social media. Hopefully these weekly updates from the site will help you keep connected to our wildlife, the essential work that is carrying on and pull together links across our website and projects which you might find interesting.

Preparations are now underway to be ready to open in June, although no specific date set yet. The re-opening of the centre will be a gradual process as we make sure that social distancing measures can be maintained for staff, volunteers and visitors. Initially there will be a small team of staff and a reduced number of visitors permitted per day to make sure all is working smoothly and safely.

The first scarce chaser dragonfly has been seen on the reserve, as well as an unusually photogenic bittern. The warm, dry, sunny weather has encouraged insects and wildflowers to fill the reserve with their activity and colour. Here are some behind the scenes photos of what breeding bird surveys look like from the surveyors perspective, always done in the early morning at Welney.

Whilst the centre and reserve have been closed we have missed our visitors and the wider teams of staff and volunteers. Some of our volunteers have been sending in photos during these challenging times which have been lovely to see, here are a few:

Now that people are able to go a little bit further afield for their exercise we have updated signage on site to say that work is being carried out behind the scenes to prepare for opening, but no official date yet. We will be putting out more signage prior to opening to help people with the new measures put in place throughout the site as well as welcoming visitors back.
