Sedge Warbler new for the year.

With the winds swinging round to the South East/West, the coming week looks good for an influx of birds.

The first Sedge Warbler of the year was singing at the far end of the Reed Bed close to the Sewage Works by the Public Footpath. A couple of Reed Warbler also present and Bittern booming there too.

More Blackcap present and plenty of Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler in song around the reserve.

Good for waders with 330+ Black-tailed Godwit, 60+ Avocet, 40+ Ruff, 20+ Lapwing, 10+ Redshank, 10+ Oystercatcher, 4 Snipe, Little Ringed Plover and Common Sandpiper.

Raptors include a report of a near adult male Marsh Harrier, 6+ Buzzard, 2 Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. Barn Owl also seen.

A flock of 15+ Corn Bunting in the Stubble Field by the Railway Line at the end of Long Hedge, also Yellowhammer singing there.

Other sightings included 3 Little Egret, 6 Brown Hare and Roe Deer.

Roe Deer always alert

If you are visiting Martin Mere for the first time and would like to know what is around and the best areas to see specific species do call in at the in focus shop, next to the Discovery Hide which over looks the Mere. It should be possible to see over 60 species in a day without too much difficulty.
