Settling into summer

South Lake

The Avocet colony is still defending their nests and chicks, we have broods of 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the lake with at least seven more nests to hatch. The Crane pair 'Bart and Ruby' continue to incubate two eggs near Hogarth Hide, please move slowly and keep quiet to avoid scaring them. A few Lapwing are still hanging about, we are unsure if any are nesting. A few pairs of Shoveler remain on the lake with Mallard, Tufted Duck and Shelduck present too.  One Cattle Egret was seen today. The Black-headed Gull colony is still busy, we can see chicks on the deep lake islands and wader scrape islands. 68 Black-tailed Godwit rare still present with the male Ruff.

Rushy Pen

Black-headed Gull chicks can be seen and many more nests on the causeway,  six pairs of Avocet (one brood of 4), Shoveler, Redshank and gathering of Shelduck and Tufted Duck.

Tack Piece

The female Lapwing had at least one chick this morning. Six Avocet on the scrape.

Holden Tower

Peregrine Falcon (two seen fighting over the reserve). Cuckoo heard. Mute Swan family.

Zeiss Hide

Five Avocet, gatherings of Shelduck, Tufted Duck and Gadwall.

Middle Point

10 Curlew on the mudflats.
