Seven species of Raptor

Slightly milder than yesterday although still feeling bitingly cold as rain and hail shower blew through.

Hail shower skirting the reserve this morning

Seven species of raptor today with Red Kite, Merlin, Peregrine, 5+ Marsh Harrier, 4+ Buzzard, 3 Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawk. We presume the Red Kite is the young bird which has been in the area now since late summer.

A adult drake Goldeneye was new in on the Mere today joining Tufted, Pochard, Shoveler, Gadwall, Mallard, Pintail, Wigeon and Teal.

VJA - is at least 26 years old making it the oldest Whooper Swan to visit WWT Martin Mere. This bird will have flown at least twice the circumference of the earth during it's migrations (picture by Dave Walsh)

No reports of the Green-winged Teal today but with 3000+ Teal to look through this isn't that surprising.

The usual waders with 700+ Lapwing, 80+ Ruff, 20+ Snipe and some Black-tailed Godwit.

Other reports included Water Rail from the Ron Barker Hide and Brambling from the Kingfisher Hide.

If you are visiting the reserve do call in at the in focus shop, next to the Discovery Hide and we can point you in the right direction as to what is around on that day.
