Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

A Sanderling was on Woodend Marsh this morning also a good count of 196 Black-tailed Godwit. Newly hatched broods of young chicks are appearing daily including two broods of 2 & 4 Pochard from Ron Barker Hide today.

Two pairs of Great Crested Grebe with young can be seen from Harrier Hide at the moment also Bee Orchids are again visible just outside Harrier Hide on the slopes by the entrance. A single Great Crested Grebe on the Mere as well today.

Bullfinches were seen on the nature trail near where Swan Link Hide used to be.

Plenty of action on the Mere with at least one pair of Little Ringed Plover sitting on eggs at the moment, lots of sitting Avocets with a few newly hatched youngsters as well, plus a few broods of Shelduck and Mallard, as well as plenty of various sized young Black-headed Gull chicks.

A Yellow Wagtail was briefly on the overflow car park this morning. A cuckoo was heard calling from the Reedbed walk area, also Marsh Harrier on site today and the usual Common Buzzard, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.
