Winter and early spring are great times to come and experience the migration of wild swans, geese and ducks which come here from Iceland and many parts of mainland Europe. Our guided learning sessions are geared closely to the national curriculum and encourage enquiry by the learners. Around 10,000 school children come to Martin Mere each year, but winter really is the wild bird highlight. There are very few places in the world where you can get this close to wild, migratory whooper swans.
Laura Belger from Burscough St John’s C of E Primary School said, “Of all the trips we do, this is my favourite. It is so hands on and the children absolutely love it. At school we do science based on seasonal changes in our local area so it’s really important to learn about migration and why the swans come all this way for the winter. This morning we have been in the hide, using binoculars and looking at the swans, doing the guided learning workshop in the theatre and learning about habitats. I highly recommend this time of year to visit Martin Mere. There are lots of warm classrooms and we often do some badge making so the children have a souvenir to take home.”

We are delighted to have begun a new partnership with our neighbours Don Fraser Coaches of Rufford. By working together, we can offer very economical coach transport to around 130 local schools. Just give us a call on 01704 891244 to check for availability.
For schools who are very local to Martin Mere, we have started to offer the chance to avoid using a coach altogether. Instead of parents dropping their children at school at 8.30, they drop them at Martin Mere, where a member of staff is on hand to meet them and make sure all is safe. The children can then be picked up from Martin Mere at school closing time. For these 25 schools, the journey is pretty much the same for parents as taking the children to school and back.
Burscough CEP and Richard Durnings primary school have both done this and Laura from Burscough St John’s C of E had this to say. “It is all safely managed with members of staff on hand to show children into the classroom. There are activities to do before the learning sessions begin and the car parking arrangements are easy, as we arrive and leave before and after any coaches do. And it saves us lots of money!”
