Sunday's Sightings

A frosty start quickly warming up in the sun and light winds.


Another good Dunlin count with 36 birds out on Woodend Marsh this morning. A few Lapwing chicks can be seen around the edge of the marsh there. Also 2 Ringed Plover, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 2 Redshank, Oystercatcher, 8 Avocet and Black-tailed Godwit.

At least 2 Cuckoo out on the Reed Bed.

Common Sandpiper on the Mere (featured image). Also there 20+ Avocet, 2 Little Ringed Plover.

Swift feeding high over the reserve and sometimes low over the Reed Bed. Plenty of Swallow and House Martin and a few Sand Martin.

Sedge, Reed and Cetti's Warbler on the Reed Bed. Whitethroat around the reserve. Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and Blackcap present but becoming less vocal.

Banded Demoiselle along the ditch running from the Sewage Works down the the UU Hide. (female pictured below)


Late yesterday afternoon a Cattle Egret was seen from the Reserve, new for the year list.

On Thursday the elusive Bearded Reedling were seen along the banking near the UU Hide.
