The breeding season continues...
The breeding season continues, with our first three nene chicks celebrating turning one month old this Wednesday, and mallard and moorhen chicks hatching around the grounds. A total of five pairs of nenes now have chicks, two have only one chick and one pair has had five! You can often see them by the children’s play area sharing parenting duties, with two of the chicks with one adult and three with the other! We also have one new pair this year, successfully raising their very first chick.
The wild black headed gull breeding colony on the lagoon is also very active, with around 400 birds now taking their places on the islands. We have observed mating and nesting behaviour, and expect to see the first eggs this month and the first chicks in May.
You can find out more about all our breeding and baby birds on one of guided walks, at 1pm every day through April and May.
At the end of May, get even closer to our baby birds on one of our exclusive behind-the-scenes duckery tours, visit http://www.wwt.org.uk/visit/llanelli/whats-on/2013/05/25/duckery-tours/ for more information.
