The spooky side of wetlands
From Saturday 27 October until Sunday 4 November you can join us for Halloween-themed half term family fun!
Catch spiders and other beasties at our creepy crawly hunts (11am), find frightening fungi and hear spooky stories about them (1pm), go fishing in our ponds for blood-sucking fish lice and leeches, magical flatworms and fierce diving beetles (2.30pm), and take part in Halloween-themed craft activities throughout the day including spider’s web nightmare catchers, lanterns and pom pom bats and spiders!
On Saturday 27 October, with expert help, you can make your very own bat box to put up in your garden to provide a home for declining British bats. On Sunday 28 October we will be running our Spooky Nature Night, an after dark exploration of the spooky side of wetlands and their inhabitants... this event has proven very popular and is now fully booked, so we will be running two nights next year.
On Saturday 3 November, as Guy Fawkes’ night approaches, you can join us for a special “hibernate or migrate?” walk at 12pm. Search for birds, reptiles and amphibians and find out how animals survive the winter. Many of the animals we find in the wetlands, including our slithery snakes and shiny water spiders will spend the winter asleep. Please remember to check your bonfires for any hibernating creatures before you light them!
