Today's sightings- Black Tern

South Lake

A Black Tern (see image above) spent the day feeding and resting on the lake. The ten Ruff including the 6 breeding plumaged males were present during the morning at least, up to 175 Black-tailed Godwit fed on the scrape but also moved to Top New Piece. The Avocet colony continues to incubate with two female Lapwing at the Hogarth Hide end of the lake too. 3 Cattle Egret dropped in to rest during the middle part of the day.

Rushy Pen

The female Smew was seen in the morning,  a 2cy Mediterranean Gull, 4 pairs of Avocet and variety of other wildfowl also present.

Tack Piece

The immature (2cy) Spoonbill was seen here on and off but also on the Top New Piece from Zeiss Hide. Three Swift flew N and a flock of 200 Swallow, House and Sand Martin slowly moved N in the morning.

Middle Point (Severn Estuary View)

One of the male Grasshopper Warblers is still reeling and showing well, it's worked, he's attracted a female. 9 Wheatear were on the fences, driftwood and turf about the point. Please follow the signs and stay on the path in this area to avoid disturbing the birds.

On the estuary mud at low tide in the morning there was 15 Grey Plover, 2 Sadnerling, 82 Dunlin, 10 Ringed Plover, 21 Bar-tailed Godwit, 5 Whimbrel, 5 Red Knot (and they were red), 5 Redshank, 3 Curlew, 3 Oystercatcher and 11 Avocet, a pair of Common Tern (local breeders) and the 2cy Little Gull were also about.
