The Grounds

MEALY REDPOLL or COMMON REDPOLL 1 Female showing well feeding in Alders between the Asian and Tundra Pens, And sitting up in the nearby willow. It is feeding with the finch flock.

Mealy Redpoll, or often called Common Redpolls, are larger and paler than our resident Lesser Redpolls. Mealy Redpolls have clear white wing bars and grey-toned plumage compared with the warm fawny colouring on a Lesser, which also have brown and white wing bars. Another good feature is the two well-marked white lines running down the bird's back. Mealy Redpolls are winter visitors from Scandinavia and a rare, but not unexpected, sight in Gloucestershire.
