WeBS and a good day for herons
The monthly WeBS count was carried out today, across the site the totals were 14 Little Grebe and 1 Great Crested Grebe (South Lake), 14 Cormorant (South Lake held 10), 6 Grey Heron, 1 Bittern (from Zeiss Hide at midday), 1 Cattle Egret (in the Rushy until replaced by a Great White Egret), 93 Mute Swan, 1 Bewick's Swan (Big pen), 29 E. White-fronted Geese (Bottom New Piece but moved to Dumbles), 541 Greylag, 758 Canada Geese, 213 Barnacle Geese, single Mandarin female on the Long Ground Pool, 196 Shelduck, 991 Wigeon (majority on Top New Piece), 14 Gadwall, 1889 Teal, 687 Mallard, 93 Pintail, 76 Shoveler (most on South Lake), 436 Tufted Duck (274 on the Rushy), 9 Water Rail, 178 Moorhen, 144 Coot, 872 Golden Plover, 1522 Lapwing, 94 Dunlin, 25 Ruff (Bottom New Piece), 41 Snipe, 154 Black-tailed Godwit,73 Curlew, 16 Redshank.
A Water Pipit flew low over the Big Pen calling, it appeared to come out of the South Lake and head for the Dumbles. A Chiffchaff was calling in the willows along the West side of South Lake.
