Wednesday's sightings

A Bittern made a surprise appearance as it flew down the Summer Walkway this morning and was then seen to land in the reedbed in front of the Zeiss Hide.  It was frequently mobbed by corvids and eventually took a short flight further towards the Kingfisher Hide, landing in the reedbed island to the south of the Zeiss Hide.

South Lake Hides

Birds included 3 Spotted Redshank, 64 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Snipe, 28 Redshank, 37 Shoveler, 3 Pintail, 59 Teal and 35 Lapwing.

Holden Tower

A Cetti's Warbler was singing from the reedbed near the Pillbox.   A flock of 50+ Starling were in the Tack Piece hedge and making foraging trips down to the field.  Out on the Dumbles were 459 Greylag and 170 Barnacle Geese.

Mid Point

A Merlin was flushed from the pill next to Mid Point and flew north along the river.  Out on the mud were 160+ Shelduck and 122 Curlew along with the usual assortment of gulls.  A Stonechat was on the cross fence and at least 3 Cranes could be seen in the fields to the north of the Goose House.

Zeiss Hide

Along with the aforementioned Bittern other birds included 15 Ruff, Golden Plover, 46 Dunlin, 12 Snipe, 300+ Lapwing, 32 Pintail, 285 Teal, 130 Wigeon.

Robbie Garnett Hide

The three Spotted Redshank left the scrape and flew towards South Lake. A single Pintail was amongst the 232 Teal and 10 Lapwing.

Martin Smith Hide

A Water Rail was showing well on the eastern end of the pool near the perimeter to the Rushy.

Rushy Hide

A single Redshank and Ruff were on the back of the lower pond first thing along with 86 Teal.  A Grey Wagtail was on the concrete overflow in front of the hide.
