Welcome to the 2011 osprey diary

The sun is shining on the Caerlaverock merses and the birds are singing so it is time to watch the skies for the return of our ospreys.

A quick scan of the driftwood perches on the merse this morning turned up a peregrine falcon but no sign yet of an osprey scoffing a flounder.

It is maybe a touch early for the return of our pair. Last year male Green AW arrived on the 3rd of April and his mate a day later. It is amazing that they arrived within 24 hours of each other to the same tree in South-West Scotland after wintering independantly in equatorial West Africa and flying back the 5,200km on their own!

We are getting our CCTV system up and running thanks to the sterling efforts of Bill and Tony and the FCS team so we should have live images on the big screen at the centre very soon.

There is also the possibility of our first fledged osprey chick from 2009, Blue LY returning to the Solway this spring. We will all be looking out for him. So hopefully you will enjoy our regular osprey updates this season.

I will try to keep you up to date with all of our news and that of our other ospreys in Dumfries & Galloway at NTS Threave and Wigtown Bay with the D&G Council ranger team. Emma and I will also keep an eye on all osprey news in the country, especially Loch of the Lowes to see if the Lady of the Loch returns. Cheers Brian.
