Wetland Bird Survey and big tides

At least 28 European White-fronted Geese were grazing near the Holden Tower today

The Severn tides flooded over the Dumbles last night and again this morning, a repeat of the high tides again tomorrow.

A full WeBS survey was made today, we counted 8,659 wetland birds.

Highlights were

12 Little Grebe, 21 Cormorant, 5 Little Egret, 7 Grey Heron, 84 Mute Swan, 28 European White-fronted Geese, 388 Greylag, 685 Canada Geese, 188 Barnacle Geese, 1 Mandarin, 149 Shelduck, 1292 Wigeon, 53 Gadwall, 2373 Teal, 762 Mallard, 85 Pintail, 126 Shoveler, 9 Pochard, 268 Tufted Duck, 5 Water Rail, 184 Moorhen, 193 Coot, 50 Golden Plover, 13+ Grey Plover, 352 Lapwing, 17 Red Knot, 2 stints, 36 Dunlin, 18 Ruff, 337 Black-tailed Godwit, 36 Snipe, 29 Curlew, 1 Spotted Redshank and 18 Redshank.

Flight views of a Pectoral Sandpiper were had from Holden Tower, the bird dropped into pools in the long grass on the edge of the Dumbles.

Also of note was a Water Pipit today.
