Wetlands access for all
All our Wetland Centres exist to fulfil founder Peter Scott’s vision of connecting people with nature, so we make it a principle that our wetlands and wildlife are accessible to everyone.
Access to wildlife and wild experiences, from exploring inside the bird hides to riding on the water in electric boats, make WWT Arundel Wetland Centre a unique day out.
Visitors can pre-plan their day out using the Accessibility Guide for Arundel Wetland Centre online and visiting the accessibilty section of our website. The hearing loop at our admission desk, enlarged maps available upon request and a section of the admission desk lowered for wheelchair users are ways we welcome all visitors to Arundel Wetland Centre. Trained assistance dogs are always welcome, details can be found on Section 3. of our Terms & Conditions.
Our most recent way of improve the experience at our centre for people with accessibility requirements is the opening of our Changing Places Toilet in April 2023. Our centre manager and facilities manager have attended Changing Places Operational Training which was delivered on behalf of Muscular Dystrophy UK by Access and Inclusion UK.
In November of 2022 we added a level walkway next to our Coastal Creek aviary so visitors could still have access to the exhibit. The exhibit was closed to limit exposing the birds to Avian Influenza. The hard level path is made from self-binding gravel in an area where paving is not advised because of the nearby wildlife.
In summer of 2021 the wooden boards and chicken wire on our Reedbed Boardwalk were replaced with grip deck to eliminate slipping. The boardwalk has always had a lip on the edges to prevent wheelchairs from going into the water. Automatic doors added to our visitors centre in March of 2019 gave ease of access to all visitors.
Arundel Wetland Centre is known for our accessible boat safari which has offered some visitors their first experience of being on the water. The guided boat can carries two non-motorised wheelchairs each trip. Manual wheelchairs are on hand for visitors who need to transfer into one for the trip. To ride, book on the day of your visit at the Admissions desk for £3 per person.
Most outdoor pathways on site are paved and level with plenty of benches sprinkled throughout the site. The Raised Pond was designed to allow people seated level access with the water.
Inside the building there is high contrast colour between walls and door frames with wide routes through the cafe area and the gift shop. There is no background music. Our Water's Edge Cafe offers vegetarian, gluten free (celiacs) and vegan options. Staff can carry trays to cafe tables.
