Whooper Swans arriving

The chilly northerly air flow makes for excellent viewing as long as you have got several layers on! Although no count it appears there has been an influx of Whooper Swan on the back of the weather with 600+ birds present this morning.

The Pink-footed Geese are tending to spend more time off the reserve feeding although local disturbance at the weekend sometimes flushes them back onto the reserve. Keep an eye out for Whitefronts and Bean Geese in the flocks.

Todays raptors included 2 Marsh Harrier, 4+ Common Buzzard, 2 Sparrowhawk and 2 Kestrel.

Waders included 600+ Lapwing, c.50 Ruff, 60+ Snipe and Green Sandpiper.

A second winter plumage Med Gull was seen with Black-headed Gull late morning. Great Black-backed, Lesser Black-backed and Common Gull present in small numbers.

At least 2 Kingfisher today. Grey Wagtails around the reserve.

Redwing and Fieldfare seen today as well as Blackbird, Song and Mistle Thrush.

As usual it should be possible to see at least 50 species of bird in a day without too much effort, although a telescope is very useful from most of the hides.

If you are visiting the reserve, pop in to the in focus shop (next to the Discovery Hide) where we have a full list of birds, and should be able to point you in the right direction to get the most out of your visit.
