Wildlife Sightings for 27th July 2023

1 Garganey on the Wader Scrape. 3 Green Sandpiper and 1 Common Sandpiper. Little Grebe brood on the wader scrape. Pochard brood on the marsh.

Look on the grassy path edges for the Green Woodpeckers and the Great Spotted Woodpeckers can be found quite reliably on our south route feeders. Cetti's and Reed Warblers singing against the wind in the main reedbeds. Huddling on the main lake's windy shores are 16 Lapwing. After the breeding season they seem to be flocking together again. 3 Tufted Duck broods are out exploring the marsh and the wader scrape with a total of 11 chicks swimming behind 3 separate females. Six Spot Burnet moths are mating in the tall grasses and Jersey Tiger moths are everywhere.


Odonata: Common Darter, Ruddy Darter, Norfolk Hawker, Brown Hawker, Broad-bodied Chaser, Four-spotted Chaser, Scarce Chaser, Downy Emerald, Emperor, Lesser Emperor, Black-tailed Skimmer, Blue-tailed/Azure/Common Blue/Willow Emerald Damselflies, Beautiful Demoiselle, Banded Demoiselle.

Butterflies: Peacock, Comma, Orange Tip, Small White, Large White, Green-veined White, Brimstone, Red Admiral, Speckled Wood, Holly Blue, Common Blue, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Marbled White, Small Skipper, Large Skipper, Essex Skipper, Gatekeeper, Purple Emperor (8/7/23), Small Copper.

Bees and other insects: Red Mason Bee, Hairy-footed Flower Bee, Buff-tailed Bumblebee, Tree Bumblebee, Common Carder Bee, Bee-fly, Hover Fly sp,, Rustic Sailor Beetle, Red-headed Cardinal Beetle, Thick-legged Flower Beetle, Stag Beetle, Jersey Tiger Moth, Cinnabar Moth, Hummingbird Hawk-Moth, Six-Spot Burnet.
