Workshop 3-Nest building with the Soham Badgers
Friday the 13th might be unlucky for some but not for the Flock Together project participants!
Myself and Karen made our way to Soham to join the St Johns Ambulance Badgers on Friday evening, well timed with the return of our very first migratory whooper swans at WWT Welney.
The badgers had a quick ‘refresher’ on their swan knowledge as they had a session on the swans delvered to them back in March –how time flies! So after a discussion on the different types of swans we might see over winter and having laid our eggs in the appropriate swan breeding grounds on the maxi map, we returned to the UK to get down to why wetlands are so important.
The water cycle game quickly dissolved into chaos but the badgers learnt about why wetlands are in trouble and a few things we can all do at home to try and help save them.
The badgers then got creative with their very own nest building abilities. Using wetland materials such as reeds and willows, the badgers were asked to design their own nests. These nests could be home to any type of bird, could be all natural or could also include some colourful man-made materials and it was quite amazing just how many designs they came up with!
Some badgers spent the whole session crafting their nests but some moved onto their next creative challenge- to draw how water moves.
And last but not least, badgers were asked to put one word on a feather to describe the session or swans, I think this sums it up quite well!
Next stop, Southery primary school!
