WWT Martin Mere Seeks Volunteers This Summer

Looking to make the most of your summer holidays? WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is searching for volunteers to help out as 'Experience Makers'.

WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre, located in Burscough, Lancashire, is actively seeking new volunteers over the busy summer period.

The centre, home to wetland stars from around the world like flamingos and otters, is looking to recruit for its ‘Experience Maker’ role. It focuses on shaping the visitor's experience through activities such as pond dipping, bug hunting, talks, and supporting in the family craft room.

WWT Martin Mere is also searching for volunteers to help bring history to life in Mere Tun, the centre’s ‘Viking Village’, where visitors can take part foraging, weaving, weapons training and other historical activities.

The roles are ideal for students seeking short-term volunteering opportunities to bolster their university applications or CVs.

Bhagavi, a current volunteer at WWT Martin Mere, said: ““I love that no one day is the same. I might be helping out with toddler sessions, or I could be pond dipping, or helping out in the craft room”

Reflecting on her favourite moments, Bhagavi said: “There was one time I was helping out in the craft room. A little girl who was doing some crafts wouldn’t go home until she had shown me what she had done. It was lovely that she was proud of her work and that she also wanted me to see it”.

No prior experience or knowledge is required to volunteer at WWT Martin Mere. The centre is looking for individuals who can commit to one or two days a week from July 20 to September 1, 2024.

Volunteers will enjoy benefits such as free entry for themselves and their families during their volunteering period, along with discounts at the café and gift shop.

Nick Brooks, Centre Manager at WWT Martin Mere, said: “WWT Martin Mere is grateful for the continued support and enthusiasm of our volunteers. As a charity, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without them. We look forward to welcoming more people into our volunteer team.”
