WWT Martin Mere wins gold for sustainability at the Lancashire Tourism Awards
Lancashire’s top tourism and hospitality businesses took centre stage at the 2024 Lancashire Tourism Awards, held in the world-famous Tower Ballroom on Tuesday, February 11.
From large and small attractions to visitor experiences and accessible tourism, the event celebrated excellence across 27 categories.
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre proudly took home the Ethical, Responsible & Sustainable Tourism award, recognising its commitment to sustainability.
The judging process was rigorous, involving in-person presentations and site visits. As part of its application, WWT Martin Mere highlighted key initiatives, including local partnerships, solar panel installations, and vital conservation efforts on the reserve.
Nick Brooks, Centre Manager at WWT Martin Mere, said:
"We’re thrilled to win this award. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, from installing solar panels to using our herd of British Longhorn cows as natural lawnmowers. We continuously work to maintain our wetlands, ensuring that the wildlife relying on this habitat can thrive."
“The gold win comes at a particularly fitting time, as we celebrate our golden anniversary on 1 March 2025. It’s great to see how far we have come after 50 years of first opening our doors.”
With this win, WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre now has the exciting opportunity to represent Lancashire at the national Visit England Awards for Excellence.
