Steart habitat creation scheme
An exciting collaboration with The Bristol Port Company
WWT is working with The Bristol Port Company (TBPC) on the design and future management of around 130ha of new intertidal habitat on the Steart peninsula, just to the west of WWT Steart Marshes.
TBPC are aiming to create a mosaic of intertidal and wetland habitats that will support a diverse range of waterbirds and other wildlife, provide enhanced coastal access and improve protection for local communities and businesses against flooding.
We will be helping TBPC to develop and deliver this alongside other organisations behind the creation of WWT Steart Marshes, Kier Group and ABPmer, on land to the north of Stockland Bristol and adjacent to Wall Common, building on the lessons learnt from creating and managing WWT Steart Marshes.
TBPC is working on this site to compensate for potential impacts of the proposed Bristol Wind Terminal at Avonmouth, if required, on the designated habitats and species of the Severn Estuary European Marine Site.
This project aims to support the development of floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea, with the turbines built at the terminal contributing to the creation of 4.5GW of new renewable energy capacity, enough to power about 4 million homes.
