About me
I’ve come to WWT from a career as a diplomat, primarily working in East and South East Asia, with a couple of assignments to Australia and Tonga. I’ve served as the British Ambassador in both Timor-Leste and Cambodia. Before becoming a diplomat, I started out in the UK’s international volunteer organisation VSO, as Country Director China and Mongolia and then Regional Programme Manager for SE Asia.
In my diplomatic roles, I’ve worked on climate change, environment, renewable energy and sustainability, and with NGOs implementing Darwin Initiative or other UK government funded programmes. I’ve taken an interest in the natural environment and conservation for many years, with most of my hard-earned holidays in recent years being taken trekking in the Himalayas, cycling or exploring national parks and coastlines.
My role
As the International Engagement Manager I’m leading my team to deliver the Wetland Learning Hub, to manage the Wetland Link International network and the World Wetland Network, to deliver CEPA (Communication, Capacity Building, Education, Participation and Awareness Raising) services to global partners, to oversee our Wetland Engagement Advisory Services, and to engage with our stakeholders and global partners on all things wetlands conservation.
Experience and interests
I’m interested in creative ways in which wetland centres can create exciting experiences for visitors, young and old alike, inspiring more people to connect to nature.
I’m also interested in ways that the importance of biodiversity and conserving the natural environment can be better communicated to people, especially those who may not regularly engage with nature, and how to raise awareness in the mental health benefits of spending time in nature, especially close to water.
