54 Taiga Bean Goose at Sarobetsu, Japan
©Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust
Wildfowl
(2013) 63: 40–55
The habitat of the two core roosting sites
of Taiga Bean Geese in the Sarobetsu
staging area, Lake Penke in autumn and
Furaoi Oxbow Lake in spring, are both being
lost to environmental degradation which is
likely to have a direct and severe influence
upon the attractiveness of the entire
Sarobetsu Plain to the “near threatened”
Japanese population of the Taiga Bean
Geese. The conservation of habitat for this
population is therefore critical and urgently
requires further investigation.
