Accessibility during autumn and winter

During the colder months, the reserve can be wet and muddy so waterproof footwear is recommended. Those with limited mobility or using push wheelchairs may find traversing the Avenue and Saltcot Loaning unsuitable. Please call us on 01387 770200 for more info.

House Martin Extension

Well it has been a strange year for our hirundines (swallows and martins), the cold weather in May on the continent and in the UK held up a lot of birds from arriving at their breeding grounds. In 2019 we had over 30 nests on our Farmhouse Tower whereas there is only one this year however some of them have decided to move house with 4 nests currently on the Peter Scott Observatory. One of which can be seen on the photo, they appear to have built a 'balcony' on to the nest with one of the chicks waiting their to be fed! The swallows also seem to have had a slow start but most of our hides now have at least one nest in them and the chicks are starting to hatch. Lets hope the weather will continue to be kind on them for the rest of this season and a better spring awaits them next year.
