Natterjacks Emerging
After the tidal surges and flooding of the Merses last week, it is very heartening to see that some of our Natterjack tadpoles have made it to the emergence stage. This week has seen little toadlets appearing on the path to the Saltcot Merse Observatory so do keep your eyes peeled on the floor when visiting this location! At this stage they are only 1cm long and the yellow stripe down the back is just starting to appear. You can see from the photograph just how well their camouflage works.
On other news, the Marsh Harrier was once again spotted on the reserve yesterday, spending quite a bit of time hunting over the fields as seen from Avenue Tower. Teal numbers have really picked up on the Folly Pond this morning. It is starting to a look a bit like Winter out there! The weather contributes to the feeling also with more rainfall occurring overnight so the Pasture Pathway remains closed and Wellington Boots are recommended for the Meadow and River Walks.
