We are delighted that a family of wild otters have been visiting the reserve regularly in the last couple of weeks!
A mother and two cubs have been seen on the Whooper Pond at different times of the day, fishing for sticklebacks! They tend to work their way around the outside of the pond and come right in front of the Sir Peter Scott Observatory! They have even been known to make an appearance during the warden’s commentated swan feed! Lots of visitors have had ‘once in a lifetime’ views and taken lovely photos as these characterful animals play in front of the hide!
Sometimes the mother leaves the cubs, who are around 4-5 months old, to fish on the pond whilst she is busy elsewhere! They are learning about swans, and seeing how close they can get - but the swans don’t seem too impressed!
The otters are often seen on our live webcam. During the day the webcam is focused on the Whooper Pond, so keep an eye out! The birds tend to get out of the water rather quickly when the otters are around, so if the swans are all on the bank and there are no birds on the water it is a sign there are otters about!
