Accessibility during autumn and winter

During the colder months, the reserve can be wet and muddy so waterproof footwear is recommended. Those with limited mobility or using push wheelchairs may find traversing the Avenue and Saltcot Loaning unsuitable. Please call us on 01387 770200 for more info.

Sightings update - 27/07/2017

There have been a couple of noteworthy sightings over the last few of days.

Osprey sightings from Saltcot are becoming a much more regular occurrence, as adults are trying to find food for their ever growing chicks. One bird gave very good views as it fished along the tideline yesterday afternoon. All of the chicks on our nest have now made their first flight, however they're not venturing too far and still regularly return to the nest.

Also at high tide yesterday, 14 Sandwich Terns flew past, including 3 that stopped to roost on the edge of the merse. It's normally quite hard to get close views of Terns on the reserve so this was a nice surprise. The first returning Scaup were on the Solway, with a flock of 10 sat on the water.

In other raptor news, an adult male Goshawk has been causing havoc on the reserve. Seen on two occasions, both in the evening around the folly pond area. It's prescence often given away by House Martin and Swallow alarm calls!

Willow Warblers have been in abundance over the last few days as birds, the majority of which as juveniles (fresh looking and bright yellow in colour compared to the worn pale adults) start to move south. More signs of passerine movement, with a female Redstart feeding along the hedge line near the reserve entrance.

Todays high tide is at 16:00, 9.1m
