Swans a-swimming

Some of the local population of Mute Swans have now started joining us at the Whooper Pond. We have been up to 19 out there but only 3 this morning. It will be a couple of weeks yet potentially before we start seeing the arrival of any Whooper Swans back from Iceland. As you can see from the photo, the Whooper Pond was enlivened by the presence of a large colony of Canada Geese first thing. Having this number of birds on the one pond actually helps attract in other wildfowl, the whole safety in numbers approach! This meant we had 30 Shoveler on there where we would normally expect to see them over on the Folly Pond (they have wisely headed back there now). Elsewhere, the Barnacle Geese are still out on the far western merses, joined by a Great White Egret today. Folly Pond once again looking nice with 20 Black-tailed Godwit on it currently. Snipe and Long-tailed tits heard flying over the Avenues, Wheater in Hawthorns down near Saltcot, Treecreepers on Sycamore in Avenue. Not to mention Peregrine and Merlin observed from the merse Observatory yesterday and Hen Harrier from Campbell Hide.

The Pasture Pathway, Meadow and River Walks are now all closed for the season.
