Accessibility during autumn and winter

During the colder months, the reserve can be wet and muddy so waterproof footwear is recommended. Those with limited mobility or using push wheelchairs may find traversing the Avenue and Saltcot Loaning unsuitable. Please call us on 01387 770200 for more info.

Tidal flooding

Yesterday brought big tides coupled with unseasonally strong winds which meant the afternoon tide flooded the majority of the saltmarsh. This is becoming more regular in winter but for late summer it is quite unusual.

Sadly this may have been a disaster for our Natterjack Toads which had been having a much better breeding season than in previous years. We hope that some of the toadlets made it to safety, but the tadpoles still in the ponds are likely to have been washed away.

These severe weather events are happening more frequently and at unusual times of the year which can have a profound effect on wildlife that has not had time to adapt. Hopefully this does not become a more regular problem.

The flooded merse is now full of ducks, particularly Mallard and Teal but we may start to see Pintail, Wigeon and Shoveler now too.

High Tide: 15:00, 9.6m

Opening times:
10am - 4pm
