Accessibility during autumn and winter

During the colder months, the reserve can be wet and muddy so waterproof footwear is recommended. Those with limited mobility or using push wheelchairs may find traversing the Avenue and Saltcot Loaning unsuitable. Please call us on 01387 770200 for more info.

Tufties Turning Up

Tufted Duck numbers are starting to increase on the Whooper Pond with over 40 birds out there this morning. The Wigeon numbers are also on the rise and the Whooper Swans have finally got the memo that it is Winter with 70 birds joining us. There seems to be a good number of family groupings so it will be interesting to see what the results of the Swan Age Assessment are for this year, with the first of these counts due next week. The Webcam is set to the Whooper Pond during the day for people to view at home, please follow the link at the bottom of the page. The Great Egret was directly in front of Saltcot merse Observatory this morning and was joined by four Little Egrets just to give a nice size comparison.

Please be aware that due to ongoing Coronavirus restrictions we have a limit to the numbers of visitors we can accommodate on the Reserve. To avoid disappointment we advise visitors, including Members, to book online before arrival. Booking can be done via the Caerlaverock website https://www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/caerlaveroc...
