Play, learn and win this World Wetlands Day
Visit WWT National Wetland Centre Wales between 31 Jan and 2 February to celebrate World Wetlands Day and join in our annual celebration of wetlands. Enjoy the beauty of over 500 acres of wetland reserve teeming with wondrous winter wildlife, and take part in a variety of wetland themed activities, games and competitions for all the family, with the chance to win bottles of wine, cuddly toys and even a family holiday, courtesy of Viña Ventisquero and NFU Mutual.
Take on the ‘upstream, downstream’ challenge by playing our wetland card game and see how the decisions you make could affect your local river. Play the game between12 – 3pm on 31 January and 2 February, on any weekend in February and throughout halfterm for a chance to win a bottle of Yali wine from Viña Ventisquero in Chile every day, plus cuddly toys for children. For the overall winner, to be drawn at the end of the month, a two-night, bed and breakfast family stay at any Farm Stay property in 2009, thanks to NFU Mutual.
World Wetlands Day occurs every year on 2 February and carries an important annual message. The theme for World Wetlands Day 2009 is ‘upstream, downstream: wetlands connect us all’ and WWT has put on a full programme of fun, interactive games and activities to illustrate the important role we can all play in safeguarding the quality of our rivers. Find out how what we do upstream affects what happens downstream.
Learning Manager at WWT National Wetland Centre Wales, Dominic Carmichael said; “We all live close to rivers; some are full of life and others are dirty and damaged. Our daily activities can directly affect your local rivers and streams: phosphates from washing powders, agricultural problems, vehicle oil and sewage affect the quality of our water and can create huge problems for the wildlife in our rivers and wetlands“.

The wetland picnic quizand frieze will explore what wetland foods are, where they have come from and how far they have travelled. Whether it be rice from Bangladesh, wine from Australiaor cranberries from the USA. Once you have uncovered the secrets of wetland foods, you can do some wetland tasting. There will also be arts activities where young people and the young at heart can have a go at printing to contribute to our wetland picnic frieze.
A wetland walk looking at our very own river will allow visitors to explore the wonders of the wetlands, from the Herons Wing Hide to the Tower, while focusing on the theme of World Wetlands Day ‘Upstream, downstream, wetlands connect us all’.
Other attractions include an exhibition about World Wetlands Day.
WWT National Wetland Centre Wales, Llanelli is open every day from 9.30am to 5pm(grounds open until 6pm in the summer) and parking is free of charge. It can be found 2 miles east of Llanelli off the A484 to Swansea. Follow the brown duck signs off the M4, J48. Nearest railway station is Llanelli.
