Construction work is ongoing to replace the old footbridge to the reserve. An alternative route is available, but the Heron's Wing and Peter Scott hides will be closed until the work is complete. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Highlights: Earthball Fungi, Sparrowhawk, Snipe, Goldfinch, Common Lizard

More fungi are popping up around the reserve and grounds with this week seeing Earthballs, Candlesnuff, Shaggy Inkcap, Turkey Tail, and Parasols. The milder weather this week means some reptiles are still active, with a juvenile Common Lizard seen scurrying in the long grass in the Millennium Wetlands.

This week a Sparrowhawk was seen upsetting the waders on Dafen and Marsh Scrapes. It was also perched on a post very near to the British Steel Hide giving great views.

Snipe have been frequently spotted again this week on Deep Water Lake in front of the Peter Scott hide. Their striped plumage is fantastic camouflage, so be sure to take a moment to scan the stone islands for these charismatic waders. Large flocks of Goldfinch (also called a 'charm') have been seen around the Peter Scott hide and all around the Millennium Wetlands. Goldfinches come together in large flocks in the winter looking for food and may even migrate as far as Spain!
