Construction work is ongoing to replace the old footbridge to the reserve. An alternative route is available, but the Heron's Wing and Peter Scott hides will be closed until the work is complete. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Recent Sightings 5th-11th June
Highlights - Cattle Egret, Stonechat, Treecreeper, Lesser Horseshoe Bat and Emperor Dragonfly
Millennium Wetlands
Deep water lake seems to be teeming with ducklings including pochard, shoveler and tufted ducks. Lots of black headed gull chicks can be seen from the Sir Peter Scott hide and we wait with excitement for the mediterranean gull eggs to hatch. About twelve lapwing nests have been successful and it can be great fun to try and spot the little chicks feeding amongst the rush. Earlier this week, a beautiful cattle egret in breeding plumage hung around the cattle on the west scrapes all day. The treecreeper nesting above the door to the herons wing hide has been very active feeding its chicks in the past few days. Both an emperor dragonfly and a painted lady butterfly have been seen for the first time this week.
British Steel Hide
It's nice to welcome cattle, including some lovely little calves, back to the marsh and they can sometimes come right up to the british steel hide. A stonechat was also singing out on the marsh which hasn't been too common yet this year. Up to three male shovelers have been spotted feeding on the dafen scrapes. Finally, a lesser horseshoe bat was also found roosting on site this week which is always great to see.
